Buffering of is a process of replacing sodium and potassium with calcium, washing away excess waste. Buffered blocks are important for growers who have a recirculating irrigation system as it gives them more control over how much Calcium their plants are getting and helps in preventing the build-up of salts. It is important to understand that washing and buffering are two very different processes that accomplish two very different goals. While washing removes only elements soluble in water, buffering also removes elements, which are naturally bound to the cation exchange complex.
Buffering coco peat is simple but a time-consuming process that needs to be done in a controlled environment. Buffering can be simply done using a wash bay system where the coco peat is rinsed thoroughly with clean water removing any water soluble impurities. Once the cleaning process is complete, wait for the water to drain out completely. Then the Calcium Nitrate solution is applied to the cocopeat and monitored carefully for a period of time. After the resting period, the cocopeat is rinsed with clean water once again
